The Hospices de Beaune wine auction : key figures

As a reminder
for 1997, 1998 and 1999 editions, just look at the following figures:

The 137th Wine Auction of the Hospices de Beaune

The year 1997 will have been marked by a significant increase (+47%) of the average cask price.

This "outbreak" can be explained mainly by the deliberate choice of the Hospices to prefer, once again, the quality, perhaps to the detriment of quantity.

In 1997, 617 casks of 228 liters were put up for sale, that is 502 of red wine (89 lots) and 115 of white wine (27 lots).

Far from being limited to one single wine, the Hospices also put up for sale 17 casks of brandy and 1 cask of Fine de Bourgogne. The lovers will appreciate this ...

The sales totaled
23,631,220.00 Francs.

In 1997, the Meursault-Genevrières Baudot vintage rung up the highest sales: indeed the auction price reached
1,449,000 Francs.

Although this vintage did not beat the historical 1985 record, in which year the Pommard Cyrot-Chaudron was sold for
2,200,000 Francs, it is nevertheless one of the five best sales of the Hospices to date.

The 138th Wine Auction of the Hospices de Beaune (1998)

577 pieces  (a piece = a barrel which after 18 months will allow to fill 300 traditional Burgundy Bottles):

Lots of Red Wine (for 473 barrels): 18,896,000 FF
Lots of White Wine (for 104 barrels): 5,803,000 FF
The guest personality charity piece: 300,000 FF
Spirituous such as "Fine de Bourgogne"
or "Marc de Bourgogne":
44,916 FF
Total 25,043,916 FF

The 139th Wine Auction of the Hospices de Beaune (1999)

729 pieces (wines) were proposed :

Lots of Red Wine (for 614 barrels): 25 222 859 FF
Lots of White Wine (for 115 barrels): 5 820 962 FF
The guest personality charity piece: 459 170 FF
Spirituous such as "Fine de Bourgogne (1 piece)"
or "Eaux-de-vie (12)":
52 046 FF
Total 31 555 037 FF

The auction was a new record even if the average price for a piece was 0,53% below compared to previous year. Concerning "charity piece" , even with  70 000 euros for  France-Alzheimer, 1987 is still the record( 620 000 FF for research on AIDS).
